I accidentally found this Quentin Blake ’s site via Puffin and was quite excited. It seems to me that when you talk about Roald Dahl, Quentin Blake would be an inevitable name to mention as his illustration partner. I’m not a fan of Roald Dahl but I think I could count myself as a fan of Quentin Blake. I like his rough lines and lively faces of his characters and how he put whimsical elements in his works.

The site is well-designed with simple layout and easy navigation. It provides interesting details of his life and works and a lot of inspirational sections. Especially for those who want to be an illustrator, don’t miss Meet Quentin Blake. My favourite part is Quentin in Action, a 10-minute demonstration of his working process. This is a must to see! Oh…Paint-a-Parrot in Kids section is fun too.

It would take some time to go through the whole site. If you are too lazy, just browsing his nice illustrations in each page is already worthwhile.

This is interesting! I found this site address in a book called
Illustration file 2004 (analogue). At a quick glance, you may think that this is done by pencil drawing but guess what…the site is named Miyuki Sakai sewing machine illustration! How amazing and delicate work she has. I ‘d really like to see her actual work!

huw morgan

Yesterday I had a chance to attend a lecture by Huw Morgan, Graphic Thought Facility. I hadn’t heard of GTF or Graphic Thought Facility until I got a newsletter from tcdc informing of the lecture. The event was held at Scala, which is a very big movie theater in Bangkok instead of tcdc’s own auditorium as it used to. This made me realize how famous Huw Morgan was. People in design field came to listen to him and I think everyone thought it’s a worthwhile two-hour lecture.

Huw Morgan was a good lecturer. His concise, get-to-the-point talking made some works that seemed so-so to me (because of my lack of interest, not because it’s bad) more interesting and inspiring. It’s a pity that the portfolio in their site doesn’t look as fun as listening to him.

WHITTArd of chelsea

I had a lunch with my friends today. We tried Spanish cuisine, at a restaurant where we used to go many years ago, with the hope that it might be as good as it was. But things always change and we came out a little bit disappointed but cheer ourselves up by going to try tea and cake at Whittard of Chelsea in Siam Paragon. It was quite a pleasure. We chose different kind of cakes and spent time chatting and sipping English Rose Tea. A self-indulgent activity but it makes our lives not too boring!

Le Petit Nicolas

pavinee | illustration, book | Thursday, July 5th, 2007

one of my favourite children’s books, Nicholas printed by Phaidon by RenĂ© Goscinny and illustrated by Jean Jacques Sempe. I forgot all the details of the book but remember that it is about cute, hilarious stories of a french boy and his friends.

And the reason I bought this set in spite of my Thai edition at home (there’s the third volume in red cover too but I haven’t seen it in Bangkok yet) is of course the illustrations. I heard that Sempe is most famous for his poster illustration but I have seen only some illustrations in The New Yorker and think that I like his Nicholas work better, maybe it’s because it represents the stories of children that I can understand…

below is a picture of Nicholas in Thai.
